This is 李白 (Rihaku), a sake brand from Shimane Prefecture.
Grade: 特別純米酒 (Tokubetsu Junmaishu) — “Special Junmai.” Junmai means it’s brewed using only rice, water, koji, and yeast, with no added distillery alcohol. “Tokubetsu” (special) signals either a higher rice-polishing ratio or a special brewing method that distinguishes it from a standard junmai.
Name: 李白 reads Rihaku (furigana りはく on the label). It’s named after Li Bai (李白), the legendary Tang dynasty Chinese poet famous for his love of wine. The vertical text on the right of the label is a couplet about him from Du Fu’s poem on the “Eight Immortals of the Wine Cup”: roughly, “Li Bai produces a hundred poems on a single dou of wine; in Chang’an’s markets he sleeps in the taverns.” 謹醸 means “carefully/respectfully brewed.”
Producer: 李白酒造有限会社 (Rihaku Shuzo Co., Ltd.), located in Ishibashi-cho, Matsue City, Shimane. It’s a respected brewery dating to the late 1800s, and the “Rihaku” name was reportedly favored by a former Japanese prime minister from the region. The brand is fairly well known internationally, especially in the US sake market.
easy to drink, fits well with other things. not so fruity nor karakuchi.
